Malunggay (eat me, eat me! 1)
I think I started to eat Malunggay about 2 or 3 years ago. Some friends introduced me to the leaves. Pero dati, I really don't know its use or sa'ang dish sya inihahalo. (Patawa 'no?) Wala kaseng gumagamit o kumakain nito sa 'min (family ko) sa Bulacan e.
Now, I'm a believer. Addict na nga yata ako. Parang lahat ng dish gusto kong lagyan ng dahon na 'to. Sinigang na malunggay, menudong malunggay, paksiw na malunggay... the list goes on.
Anyways here is what I read recently at malunggay.com
Malunggay (or Moringa in English or Moringa oleifera Lamk - scientific name) ...
1) can rebuild weak bones
2) enrich anemic blood
3) enable malnourished mother to feed her starving baby
4) has calcium of 4 glasses of milk
Each ounce of Moringa contains seven times the Vitamin C found in oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, three times the iron of spinach, four times as much calcium as milk and three times the potassium of bananas.
5) has vitamin C of 7 oranges
6) potassium of 3 bananas
7) can make dirty water drinkable
8) treat diabetes and high blood pressure
9) staunch skin infection
10) has triple the iron of spinach and more impressive attributes than olive oil
11) has quadruple the beta carotene, which is good for the eyes and fights cancer

To those of you who are lactose intolerant or don't like milk but want to fill up your body's calcium needs, why not try malunggay? Mas marami pa siyang calcium kesa sa milk, mas mura pa. (di pa nakakataba) Malunggay leaves cost 5 pesos per bunch (per tali) in the markets. (or libre pag may kapitbahay ka na puede mong hingan) While powdered milk costs about 22 pesos per pouch (sachet) (42 pesos ung maliit na box) in sari sari stores. San ka pa?
We can get calcium from veggies as well. I can give you two more veggies that is calcium rich--2 palang kase un palang alam ko--haha!
So when you cook tinola or tahong or clams or soup, try nyo ilagay ang malunggay. SARAP PROMISE! And share with me recipes ha.
